Your alumni association—yes, that old school WhatsApp group you ignore—might be more valuable than you think. In the UK, networks are gold. Alumni groups often open doors faster than qualifications. Whether it’s a job tip, a housing opportunity, or even someone to show you how to apply for your kids' school, your old classmates, especially those who’ve lived in the UK longer, can be a lifeline.

Many alumni groups host reunions, virtual workshops, prayer meetings, and “diaspora updates.” These events aren’t just for socialising. They’re soft power. That ex-classmate who now works in NHS HR? That old friend who runs a cleaning agency and needs hands? That senior you looked up to who’s now a landlord? These people can refer you, endorse you, and guide you. But you need to show up, ask questions, and contribute value too.

Being involved with your alumni requires more than just asking for help. It is about being visible. Offer suggestions. Share employment links. When someone is in need, offer to help. That is how you increase social capital. You can even work with others to build enterprises, form associations, or manage community projects. The United Kingdom values organised groupings, and alumni associations are already structured, trustworthy, and familiar.

If your school does not already have one, build one. Use Facebook groups, WhatsApp, or Zoom to get people together. Share updates, recognise member accomplishments, and keep everyone involved. A robust alumni association could establish a scholarship, form a real estate group, or just help each other settle in the diaspora. Don't underestimate the importance of where you come from.
