Loyalty is a beautiful thing, but in the UK workplace, blind loyalty may be a trap. Many immigrants make the mistake of staying in the same profession for 5-10 years, believing that consistency will eventually lead to advancement. Sometimes it does, but more often than not, employers reward employees who ask for more, apply elsewhere, or advocate for themselves. Do not confuse job stability with stagnation.

If your employer does not invest in your development, respect your time, or compensate you fairly, it is not loyalty; it is self-neglect. You can be appreciative for your employment while yet seeking better prospects. Update your CV on a frequent basis. Take short classes. Ask for additional responsibilities. Attend career fairs. Inform your employer that you're growing, and if they don't respond, someone else will.

The UK work economy fosters mobility. People frequently change occupations to enhance their pay, obtain new experience, or work closer to home. There's no shame about it. In reality, it demonstrates ambition. Staying in one area for too long without progressing can actually harm your chances of advancement. Employers may assume you are not motivated or skilled enough to advance.

Also, consider the emotional toll. Working long hours without appreciation or remaining in stressful surroundings depletes your self-esteem. It's good to take a step back and wonder, "Am I being valued here?" If not, you owe it to yourself to pursue new opportunities. Life in the UK is pricey. Your efforts and abilities should translate into both revenue and dignity.

Be committed to your future, not just your employer. When you recognise that you have control over your career, you will no longer wait for permission to advance. You'll start asking for more, trying out new jobs, and walking through doors rather than waiting for someone to open them for you.

And as a point of note, don’t perceive yourself as being irreplaceable; circumstances may permit the parting of ways with your employer. It may be internal conflict, the choice of a better replacement, reorganisation in the workplace, termination by either party, or death.

In all of these, your employer could be swift in replacing you.

Like is often said, ‘there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests.’
