Many Nigerians come to the UK with excellent degrees, including Master's, PhDs, and various certifications. While laudable, the UK system rewards relevance rather than paper. If you rely solely on your certifications, without updating your abilities or adapting to the environment, you will remain stuck. This is not about diminishing your education; it is about evolving it.

Your foreign degree may need to be "converted" or complemented with UK-recognised courses. Don't be offended; this is typical. Even European Union citizens are occasionally required to do this. Focus on bridging the gap. Ask questions. To confirm the equivalency of your degree, use platforms such as UK NARIC (now ENIC). Determine what is in demand and modify accordingly. Being rigid is expensive.

Beyond qualifications, UK businesses appreciate soft qualities such as punctuality, adaptability, communication, and teamwork. Can you handle a project? Can you work independently? Can you manage diversity? These are sometimes used to determine who gets recruited or promoted. So, while your degree may provide opportunities, your character and skill set will keep you in the room.

Don't underestimate the value of starting small. Many people who are now senior managers began as junior employees. A humble beginning overseas is not a failure; rather, it is a plan. Take on roles that will provide you visibility. Volunteer, intern, or work part-time to acquire local references. Add certifications as needed. In this country, mobility is essential; don't let your degree hold you back.

At the end of the day, qualifications are a tool, not your identity. Your thinking, attitude, and determination to grow are what will propel you forward. Learn the system. Improve your talents. Above everything, keep open. The UK is full of opportunities; but only for those who can match diplomas with real-world applications.
