One mistake many Nigerians make overseas is taking the first available job and staying there for years.  Yes, we understand—you have bills, need to send money home, and want to be productive.  However, if you do not make deliberate employment choices, you will work hard but achieve little.  Don’t let desperation trap you in survival mode.

There’s nothing wrong with starting small; many successful people abroad began as cleaners, drivers, or care aides.  The trick is to not remain there indefinitely without a plan.  Consider: Is this job helping me grow?  Does it provide me with transferable skills?  Is what I’m learning helping me achieve my long-term goals?  If the answer is “no,” it’s time to reconsider.

Being purposeful entails selecting employment that fits with your long-term goals.  If you wish to work in healthcare, seek for entry-level positions in hospitals, such as administrator or porter.  If you want to be an entrepreneur, pursue jobs in sales, customer service, or logistics.  Every job you accept should help you get closer to your goal, not just fill your schedule or pay your rent.

Also, do not be scared to try new things.  You are not stranded.  You can work, study part-time, start a side business, or volunteer in the sector you want to pursue.  Keep your eyes open.  Sign up for notifications.  Network inside your industry.  Speak with folks doing what you wish to do.  This is how intentional individuals move: step by step and with vision.

In this country, planners are respected.  Employers value employees that have ambition and direction.  If you want to advance in your job, you must make decisions with purpose.  So don’t just work hard; work smarter.  Every work involves either realising your own or someone else’s dreams.  Choose wisely.
