In Nigeria, when a corporation is ‘restructuring,’ it usually means a major crisis. However, in the United Kingdom, reorganisation is a common occurrence in the workplace. Businesses alter structures, leadership, departments, and roles—and this isn’t always a bad thing. However, if you are not prepared, you could lose your job ‘overnight.’ There’s usually some warning, and processes to follow.

You should never get too comfortable in your job. Even if you enjoy your it, you should constantly strive to improve your skills. Learn how to perform different responsibilities. Become certified. Join a professional body. Save money. Create a buffer. Many people are surprised when the corporation “restructures” and their position is abruptly eliminated. However, those that have prepared merely pivot into other opportunities.

Pay alert to the signs: management meetings behind closed doors, a sudden block on recruitment, and discreet talk about “efficiency.” These items are important. Speak with your supervisor. Ask HR questions. And if you notice anything is shifting, don’t wait to be pushed. Begin applying elsewhere. Start networking. Be proactive. The UK employment market favours the prepared.

Reorganisation can also present opportunities. Perhaps you’ll be assigned to a better team. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to negotiate a new title. If you are valuable, they will find a place for you. However, if you have been ordinary and forgettable, you will be the first to depart. That is why striving for excellence pays off every day. Don’t simply show up; show up strong.

So, do not be afraid of change. Just be prepared for it. In a system with no guarantees, the smartest workers prepare rather than panic. Keep learning. Continue connecting. Keep improving. When the winds of change blow, you will not be shaken. You will rise.
