Redundancy isn’t a curse. In the United Kingdom, it is just a commercial choice, which occurs more frequently than many people know. A corporation can decide to downsize, restructure, or automate procedures, and your position may suddenly become “no longer required.” It has nothing to do with how diligent or pious you are. The question isn’t whether redundancy will occur, but when—and, more crucially, are you prepared?
Preparation begins with an attitude. Don’t base your identity on your job title. Yes, you may have worked there for years, but your job does not determine your fate. Always have a backup plan. Update your CV on a frequent basis. Save a percentage of your salary each month. Create relationships inside your industry. Obtain certifications that make you relevant in more than one role. If you ever get that dreaded redundancy letter, it shouldn’t catch you flat-footed.
Understand your rights. In the United Kingdom, redundancy is subject to certain laws and entitlements. If you’ve been with your employer for at least two years, you’re likely entitled to statutory redundancy pay, a notice period, and, in some cases, job-hunting assistance. Do not leave empty-handed. Read your contract. Speak with HR. If you are doubtful, use free legal services or Citizens Advice. Many immigrants leave in quiet, unaware that they could have walked away with thousands of pounds.
Redundancy can be emotionally taxing. It may feel like rejection or failure, especially for individuals who have put their all into the profession. But it is not personal. It’s only a shift. Redundancy can lead to better positions, personal business, or even a total career change. Embrace the change.
In this country, individuals who survive career upheavals are not the strongest; rather, they are the most prepared. Stay alert. Be adaptable. Don’t wait until the storm arrives to hunt for shelter. Prepare yourself today so that if redundancy occurs tomorrow, you’ll be ready to pivot rather than panic.
In most reorganisations, there’s the choice of being paid a redundancy package. This opens opportunity. You could explore entrepreneurial dreams; you could use it as a buffer, while seeking other opportunities; you could pay off loans; you could invest in beneficial courses; you could invest in stocks and shares; you could give some to charitable causes; you could be involved in business collaborations, etc.
If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.
