One of the first shocks that Nigerians experience abroad is the realisation that fraud does not have a consistent face.  It is not always a sinister character in a dark alleyway.  Sometimes it’s someone in a suit giving you “investment opportunities,” or a nice voice on the phone claiming to be from your bank.  Unfortunately, fraudsters are still active in the United Kingdom.  In fact, the system is so advanced that they don’t need to put a pistol to your head. Just a few clicks and your account is depleted.

As a newcomer, there is a natural tendency to trust others, particularly fellow Nigerians.  However, let’s be honest: not everyone who grins at you is a buddy.  Take heed who you disclose your information to. Don’t be so thirsty for shortcuts or quick cures that you ignore warning signs.  If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.  Always run your own checks.  Do not think someone is legitimate simply because they speak pidgin or claim to be a ‘brother’ from your state.

Also, be wary of emotional manipulation.  Some fraudsters claim to be distressed or create a sense of urgency in order to coerce you into paying money or disclosing personal information.  They know how to tug at your heartstrings. Don’t fall for it.  Always pause and reflect.  Even if the person claims to be from a government office or law enforcement agency, check official websites or helplines before taking any action.

Stay informed. The UK government regularly updates their websites with scam alerts and tips on staying safe. Banks also offer fraud prevention guides. It might seem like small talk now, but these few minutes of reading could save you from losing your life savings. Fraud doesn’t announce itself. It creeps in when you least expect it.

Fraudsters could come from people of different backgrounds and races, and in all forms and shapes. Be extremely cautious before signing the dotted lines, or before any commitments which you may regret long afterwards.
